Design Technology
"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works". Steve Jobs
At Holywell Primary School, it is our intent that Design and Technology inspires pupils to be innovative and creative thinkers who have an appreciation for the product design cycle through ideation, creation and evaluation.
We want our pupils to develop the confidence to take risks, through drafting design concepts, modelling and testing and to be reflective learners who evaluate their own work and the work other others.
We feel it is vital to nurture creativity and innovation through design, and by exploring the designed and made world in which we all live and work. We aim to build an awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives and encourage pupils to become resourceful, enterprising individuals who will have the skills to contribute to future design advancements.
DT is taught through individual projects for each year group. All children will participate in structure, mechanisms, textiles and food technology. Our curriculum has been tailored to the school to ensure that all children meet the aims of the National Curriculum. To build our scheme we have taken units from ‘Kapow Primary’ and have linked this with previous constructed units.
We ensure there are opportunities for pupils of all abilities to develop their skills and knowledge in each unit. Progression is built into the DT schemes of work, so pupils are increasingly challenged as they move up through the school.
Each Design and Technology project follows a four step process:
ASPIRATIONS FOR THE FUTURE
Pupils develop an understanding of how subjects and specific skills are linked to future jobs.
Here are some of the jobs pupils could aspire to do in the future as an Designer:
- Civil Engineer
- Architect
- Theme Park Designer
- Furniture Designer
