PE & Outdoor Learning
‘Physical Fitness is not only one of the most important keys to healthy body, but it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity’ John.F.Kennedy
At Holywell Primary School we follow the National Curriculum and use the Greenacre Sports Partnership scheme of work across the school to scaffold and enrich the delivery of this. We are committed to ensuring every child is given opportunities to participate and develop passion in a wide range of physical activities, based around the fundamental ABC’s of sport – Agility, Balance and Co-ordination.
Children develop the knowledge to participate in a range of physical and sporting activities through a carefully planned progressive curriculum. Children learn skills required to use their bodies efficiently and effectively, understanding how their body moves to affect their performance and the importance of a healthy and fit lifestyle. Our aim is for all children to achieve their personal best through high quality, teaching and learning opportunities.
Alongside this, we want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, as well as developing values and transferable life skills such as fairness and life-long values.
We have defined the key characteristics of PE at Holywell as:
- The ability to acquire new knowledge and skills exceptionally well and develop an in-depth understanding of PE.
- The willingness to practise skills in a wide range of different activities and situations, alone, in small groups and in teams and to apply these skills in chosen activities to achieve exceptionally high levels of performance.
- Understanding of living a healthy lifestyle, including exercising regularly.
- The ability to remain physically active for sustained periods of time and an understanding of the importance of this in promoting long-term health and well-being.
- A willingness to participate eagerly in every lesson, highly positive attitudes and the ability to make informed choices about engaging in extra-curricular sport.
In addition to our weekly Physical Education lessons, our children are exposed to key Physical Education areas of learning in other parts of the timetable. Through active learning sessions children are able to associate engagement in physical activity with a variety of physical, social and mental health benefits.
As well as this, children take part in the daily mile each day, which consists of fifteen minutes of walking, jogging or running outside to encourage healthy lifestyles and improve mental health. Active and cross-curricular learning provides further physical education learning opportunities, including timetabled use of the forest school area for each class. Holywell Primary School also encourages extra-curricular physical activity in children through a wide variety of after-school clubs, as well as participation in regular competitions through partnership with the Sheppey and Swale Schools Sports Partnership.
Children also take part in a termly ‘Holywell Loves Sport’ activity day. This is an opportunity for children of all ages to take part in sports activities which are not part of our regular timetabled scheme of work. Activities may include, Golf, Bowls, Frisbee, Skipping etc.
In Key Stage Two, children participate in swimming lessons in Year 5 to meet the expected standard. If needed, children are given booster sessions in Year 6 if needed to support them in reaching this standard.
At Holywell our curriculum is progressive and allows children to learn and apply skills in a variety of sports activities to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise. We aspire for children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity that they pursue outside of school and in future life outside of primary school. We share sporting achievements both in and out for school in Celebration Assembly, so that we are promoting sports and activities, as well as celebrating all levels of success.
